This species war has been hidden by the language of the law, which defines war solely with respect to humans. Every restriction on war powers since the Treaty of Westphalia is grounded in this distinction, rendering animals valueless and legitimating violence towards them.

We must also call out the debate community’s active participation in the war, overwhelmingly supporting meat options, sending much of the registration fees to bio-political death machines. Our project is not to blame the disenfranchised workers or tell other underprivileged people to go vegan when they are stuck in food deserts, but to shock our consciousness and ask questions about our relation to non-human animals.

Factory farms negate this relation by disassociating animals from their products. Failing to recognize that the meat on the lunch platter came from the death of sentient creatures allows the consumption to continue without critical reflection.

The species war is constantly referred to on this topic, such as when we look at the "dehumanization" that occurs in indefinite detention centers, but the implied dead animals are always missing. We ignore the indefinite detention and targeted killing of animals while simultaneously exploiting their implicit torture to further a message of "human rights". Highlighting the material reality of animals sparks movements to fight human and non-human exploitation.
